Definition of Pattern

Definition of pattern
A repeated decorative designDescribing word for pattern:
  • repeated
  • criss-cross
  • stripy
  • spotty
  • matching
In this photograph the pattern is created by the continuous pointed roofs which are diagonally places in the photograph. This is a man made pattern as they have been placed in this fashion to create the continuity.

This image is of three different colored round fruit which have been place diagonally. This creates a pattern as the rows of fruit have been repeated according their colors, this created as decorative pattern. This is also a man made pattern.

This image is showing a natural pattern as it occurs naturally along with nature. This pattern is the lines within the leaf as they are symmetrical on either side  which is being separated by the stem in the middle of the leaf.

This is another example of a natural pattern as it is on a giraffe which is obviously a natural element. This pattern is created by the patches of brown skin which are continuous throughout the whole photograph. However all of the brown patches are not the same shape or size.

My definition of pattern is something that is repeated

Definition of Colour

definition of colour

  •   an attribute of things that results from the light they reflect, transmit, or emit in so far as this light causes a visual sensation that depends on its wavelengths
  •  the aspect of visual perception by which an observer recognizes this attribute
  •  the quality of the light producing this aspect of visual perception
Describing words for colour
  • bright
  • dull
  • luminous
  • light
  • dark
  • neon
  • multicolored

This image shows contain neon colors which are shown under a UV light. All the colors are mixed together which are covering the objects hands. The objects hands can hardly be seen due to the bright colors being the main focus and standing out the most.

In this image there are four brightly colored cars which are in a black and white set. The cars automatically standout as they are being contrasted against the black and white background.

This image is similar to the above image as the bight red car is being contrasted on the black and white background. Even the women in the car is in  black and white making her insignificant i  the image due the the car being the only thing in color.

In this image two main colors are being used which are blue and red. The two colors are exploding together on the person. The two colors almost look like smoke combining together.

My definition of color is an visual element which can create a mood/atmosphere within the image.

Definition of Blurring

definition of blurring
Make or become unclear or less distinct: "tears blurred her vision"; "the pages blurred".

Describing words for blurring

  • unclear
  • misty
  • distorted
  • murky
This images shows blurring by the woman moving fast which allows the camera to capture the movement. It is shown through blurring as it is the only way we are able to see movement in a still image,

This image is also showing blurring by the car moving rapidly around the corner. The car is the only object that is blurred which shows that it is the only object that is moving.

This image is showing blurring by the lite up wheel spinning around in circles. The lights on the wheel almost make the wheel appear to be just spinning lights. The bright lights draws the audience to the wheel making it the central focal point.

Lastly this image is showing blurring in a different way . The background of the image is blurred and the car is focused,  this still make the car to appear as if it moving as the blurred background is representing the car passing it.

My definition of blurring is the way movement is shown within a still image.

photographer 2- Corrine Vionnet

I have chosen Corrine Vionnet as I like the way she creates blurred photographs of famous tourist attraction. These images are different as it has hundreds of the same photographs placed on top of each other. I feel that her images signify memories which people have made as well as showing the movement of the thousand of people who have visited these famous attraction all over the world. Lastly i chose Corrine Vionnet as she shows blurring in a different way which is all about layers of images.

The composition of image one is Big Ben seen form across the river, the building looks blurred with the different layers of the image. This almost gives the impression of mountains in the distance. From the layers of images it starts to create ghostly figures in the foreground. The colours that have been used are browns, creams and pale blues. This gives the effect of the images looking frozen in time. The purpose of this image is to make you look closely and see dim shadows, vague silhouettes that aimlessly wander around. More than anything, the haunting figures make us think about our own fading memories and the passage of time. We always take the same photographs because the photograph proves our presence and make it become a memory.

The composition of image two is the Eifel Tower in the centre of the photograph. Faintly you can see the blur of the people how have been built up in the making of the photograph, this almost makes the bottom of the image just become a dark blur which represents all the people have been at this famous attraction. The fact that the Eifel Tower is in line as does not blur represents that it has been unchanged whereas the people attending the attraction are always changing.

The composition of image Three is a famous temple which is the centre of the photograph to show its importance. The main temple building is not blurred showing that it has been unchanged however there are pillars on each side of the temple which are slightly fainter than the actual temple suggesting that they may be new or no longer there. On either side of the image there are mass amount of blur to represent the people who are their which suggests this is a very popular place to visit.

Lastly the composition of the forth image is again a famous attraction which is rounded and takes up most of the photograph. A quarter of the Building is fainter than the rest which may suggest that it is in the middle of being built or has been damaged due to how old it is. Similar to the other photographs there is a dark blur at the bottom of the image which is representing the mass amount of people who have attended this attraction.

influence
This photographer has influenced me in a way in which i have started to experiment with moving the camera to show movement rather than the actual object moving. This way i would be able to make something look like they are moving when they really now, this is better as i was restricted in my movement image as i was only able to move certain objects.

Summary
Overall i like this photographer as they show a different way of showing movement as well as creating a mysterious atmosphere in the photograph by the ghostly looking figures. Also it is a way of showing all the different people that have created memories in these famous landmarks.

photographer 1- Solve Sundbo

I have chosen Solve Sundbo because I like the way he projects the patterns on to the person which makes it different from any other pattern photograph. I feel this a alternative way of showing man made patterns as it is much more creative and individual compared to other patterns. Lastly i like the aspect that they patterns also highlight specific features of the model such as their lips which are always brightly colors.

In image one it is a close up of a woman with white pale skim and large projected circles are on her face, arms and hair. The circles are more visible on her skins than her hair as the paleness of her skin makes the circles sharp and standout in the photograph. One of the circles is around her mouth which may be to focus the audience at her lips which are blue in this case. This is effective as the whole photograph is in black and white except from her lips which may be to highlight a significant feature.

In image two it is a medium close up of a woman pouting. This photograph is different from image one as the circles are black shadows whereas before they was hollow circles which allowed the audience to see model. In this image the black circles over up some parts of the woman’s skin which may be highlighting that she has something to hide maybe. The woman is wearing bright red lip stick in this photograph which standouts from the pale skin, the fact that she is pouting may be suggesting that her lips are significant in the photograph.

In the third image the woman has thin lines projected on to her skin; this can either represent pattern or lines as it is effective in both ways in this photograph. As all of the lines are thin but there is a mass amount of them, this almost covers the whole of the woman body which may be suggesting that she is not allowed to show her body and that she is hiding behind the lines. The lines could represent prison bars which could imply that the woman is tapped behind bars.

Lastly in the fourth image the same technique has been used however smalls shadowed circles have been projected however there are more which still covers a fair amount of the woman body. Due to the women’s body being pale and then having a continuous pattern projected one it her features almost disappear making her look more like an object than a human being.  Similar to the other photographs the woman has bright pink lips which standout from her pale skin giving the image a focal point.

Influence  This photographer has influenced me in a way in which i want to try to use form and pattern at the same time to create a interesting image. When taking my own photographs as i am more aware of how to make certain aspects standout like this photographer does by using black shadows against white pale skin.

Summary
Overall i really like this photographer as they change the composition of the image however keep the same pale skinned model to make the pattern shadow stand out. I also like the element of the bright lips which is continuos throughout all of this photographers series of image.

Discussion

In this Unit we are going to be study the formal Elements.
The formal elements are:
  •  Line
  •   Colour
  •   Shape
  •   Pattern
  •   Depth
  •  Blurring
  • Tone
  • Form
  • texture
  • reflection

We are study formal elements as it is the basics of photography and it allows you to build up a different view on how to take a good photograph which is likely to be different from what it used to be. The formal elements allow you to show simple things in everyday like in a different aspect which is more interesting for the audience. In some aspect of the formal elements such as blurring you are able to show things in the photograph that you are unable to see with the human eye.

In this Unit I am going to do image banks and work diaries for each of the formal elements to show my progression from looking at other people photographs on the formal elements to me taking my own photographs of the formal elements.

The formal elements help us break down aspect of everyday life in to a series of images, here are examples of how the formal elements are shown through everyday things

Line can be shown in things such as brick walls, blinds, railway tracks, hair etc
Shape can be shown in things such as silhouettes, shadows, windows, drains, signs etc
Pattern can be either natural or man made, example of man made pattern would be within wooden planks on the floor, drain covers, clothes. Natural patterns can be shown in thing such as leaves, flowers, animals etc
Depth can be shown in things such as rows of windows, radiators, walls, tables etc
Blurring can be shown in things such as cars, humans, anything that creates movement etc
Tone can be shown in things such as room with windows, forests, plants etc
Form can be shown in things such as people, door handles, trees, buildings etc
Texture can be shown in things such as wall, tree trunks, sand paper, windows etc
Reflection can be shown in things such as mirrors, glass, cars, glasses, puddles etc

Tone

Tone in photography is the range of the lightest to the darkest parts of an image

Here are examples of tone in photography

This is the classic example of tone in photography which is back and white. In this photograph the clouds are the lightest part of the photograph and the ground would be the darkest part of the of the photograph. The tone works well in this photograph as the two subjects are either wearing black or white as this is from a wedding day.

In this photograph the tone has a hint of purple, this gives the image a era of mystery.  This takes any positive atmosphere that could have been present. This image has its darkest tones in mountains and its lightest tones in the sky.

All of these image show tone either through black and white or sepia however they all have there darkest tones and there lightest tones which is usually the sky. All of the images contain different shades of the tone which make them so effect in representing tone. In the image of the horses, each horse shows a different tone meaning the furthest away horse has the darkest tone and the middle horse has the lightest tone.
